Team India will begin their tour of England at the end of this week when they play the rearranged fifth Test from last year’s tour, which will not only determine the outcome of the five-match series but will also serve as a mirror for the WTC 2021-23 cycle.

Following the conclusion of the one-off Test, India will don the blue jersey for the white-ball leg, which will consist of three T20 Internationals followed by the same number of ODI matches.

All six white-ball matches between England and India will be played at various locations in the United Kingdom. Both teams have announced their squads for the rescheduled fifth and final Test in Birmingham, but their white-ball squads have yet to be revealed.

After veteran skipper Eoin Morgan announced his retirement from international cricket on Tuesday, England’s white-ball leadership will undoubtedly change (June 28).

India will also play in England for the first time under Rohit Sharma’s leadership. However, the Indian captain is unlikely to play the one-off Test after contracting the virus last week and being placed in isolation. India will be without the services of injured players KL Rahul and Kuldeep Yadav, with Ruturaj Gaikwad joining the list.

India last played the West Indies in an ODI series at home, where they swept Kieron Pollard and co 3-0 after being whitewashed by South Africa in their previous overseas ODI series earlier in January.

1. Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is expected to be fit when India kicks off the three-match ODI series on July 12. This would be the 35-year-first old’s overseas assignment as India captain in the 50-over format, having missed the ODI series against South Africa earlier this year due to a hamstring injury.

Rohit has scored 9238 runs in 230 ODIs, with 544 of those runs coming against England. Rohit will draw inspiration from his magnificent 2019 World Cup performance, in which he scored five centuries and finished as the leading run-scorer with 648 runs at an average of 81.

2. Shikhar Dhawan

Dhawan’s only home in the Indian team is 50-over cricket, as he is overlooked in the other two formats. At the top, the 36-year-old will continue his long-standing partnership with Rohit.

Dhawan does not have a great record against England in particular – 526 runs at 37.57 with just one half-century in 15 innings – but thanks to ICC tournaments, he made 1101 runs at 63.76 in England and Wales region. The ODI series will be an opportunity for the southpaw to assert its dominance over England.

3. Virat Kohli

The former Indian captain is going through a rough patch in his career, and the fact that he hasn’t scored a century in over two and a half years puts pressure on him to deliver runs at his old self.

Kohli reached the three-figure mark in ODI cricket against West Indies on August 14, 2019, at Queen’s Park Oval. Kohli holds the fastest 9000, 10000, 11000, and 12000 ODI runs records. Kohli will stay at No. 3 and prepare for the 2023 World Cup next year.

4. Suryakumar Yadav

The middle-order specialist returned to the Indian team for the Ireland T20I series after missing the South Africa T20Is at home while recovering from a forearm injury sustained while playing for Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022.

The 31-year-old has appeared in seven One-Day Internationals for India, scoring 267 runs at 53.4 with two fifties. This will be his first white-ball tour of England after making his international debut against the same opposition at home in March 2021.

5. Rishabh Pant

The flamboyant Indian player has recently come under fire for his poor batting form in the South Africa T20I series at home, which he captained. Despite the advice of experts to take a break from international cricket, Pant will play for India in ODIs.

Pant’s finishing abilities are undeniable, and on his day, the Indian gloveman can wreak havoc on any formidable bowling attack.

6. Shreyas Iyer

Iyer has only played one One-Day International (ODI) against England, in which he scored six runs. In 24 ODI innings, the Indian middle-order batter scored 947 runs at a strike rate of 41.17.

Iyer has had an up and down season with the bat, scoring 94 runs in five T20Is against South Africa at home, but he is unlikely to start for India, with Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Hooda likely to replace him.

7. Deepak Hooda

Hooda made his ODI debut against the West Indies in Ahmedabad in February of this year. The Rajasthan batter had a good start to the 50-over format, scoring 26* and 29 in two innings.

Hooda is a player who can assess a situation quickly and play his shorts accordingly. His latest century against Ireland strengthens his case for the England One-Day Internationals. He joined Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, and KL Rahul as the fourth Indian player to score a T20I century.

8. Ravindra Jadeja

Jadeja last played an ODI against Australia in December 2020, and he has missed nine ODIs for India, mostly due to injury. Jadeja is India’s best all-rounder at the moment, with 2411 runs and 188 scalps.

Given his inclusion in India’s Test squad for the one-off Test against England, Jadeja is likely to return to the ODI setup, especially given that the World Cup will be held in India next year.

9. Shardul Thakur

The Indian all-rounder is expected to be in India’s ODI squad, as he has been a regular feature in the ODI team except for the Sri Lanka series when he was with the Test team. He was India’s lone warrior in the South Africa series, scoring 50* and 40* before missing the final ODI due to a niggle.

Shardul has only played one One-Day International (ODI) against England. In the Headingley ODI of India’s 2018 tour of England, he remained unbeaten on 22 and dismissed the dangerous Jonny Bairstow.

10. Jasprit Bumrah

Bumrah is India’s most destructive bowler in any format and the captain’s go-to bowler to break a tie. Bumrah was rested for the South Africa T20Is at home so that he could be charged for the England tour.

Bumrah has taken 113 ODI wickets in 70 games but only six against England. If Rohit remains unavailable, the 28-year-old pacer’s name is being floated as a possible replacement to lead India in the one-off Test.

11. Mohammed Shami

Shami, who has 17 wickets in 11 games against England with best figures of 5/69 during the 2019 World Cup, will pair Bumrah with the new ball. Shami has not played in an ODI for India since the first two ODIs against Australia in Sydney in 2020.

12. Bhuvneshwar Kumar

Kumar has been making significant changes to his bowling, which could be a positive sign for the Indian team. In the second T20I, Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a brilliant spell of 4/13 from four overs against South Africa, reminding fans of his debut against Pakistan in 2013. Bhuvneshwar Kumar can take advantage of the changing conditions in England and add to his 28-wicket haul in ODIs in the England and Wales region.

13. Prasidh Krishna

After making his debut against England in March 2021 in Pune, the Karnataka pacer has played seven ODIs for India. Prasidh has been a regular for the Men in Blue in the 50-over format, taking 18 wickets at 16.72, with 4/12 against the West Indies being his best bowling strategy. Prasidh, who took six wickets against England in 2021, could be India’s backup bowler in the three ODIs.

14. Yuzvendra Chahal

The Indian leg-spinner is making his way back into white-ball teams after being left off the T20 World Cup squad last year. Chahal could fill in for Kuldeep Yadav, who is expected to miss the ODI series due to injury. Chahal has only played four games against England and has only taken two wickets. He may be given the opportunity to improve his performance against a team, which could be described as his ‘Achilles’ heel.’

15. Axar Patel

Axar, who last played an ODI against New Zealand in 2017, could be included as a backup for Jadeja. Between 2014 and 2017, Axar appeared in 38 One-Day Internationals for India, taking 45 wickets at a 4.43 economy rate. He played in T20Is against South Africa and Ireland. This could be the best chance for Gujarat’s players to return to the ODI squad.
